Sports Events in Amsterdam

Sports Events

Every year Amsterdam hosts some of the most world-renowned sporting events, from darts and tennis to marathons and football. If you fancy coinciding your trip to Amsterdam with being a spectator at a sporting event, check out some of the events below.

1. Ajax

Amsterdam Football Club (AFC) Ajax was founded in March 1900 and is historically one of the most successful clubs in the world, one of just five clubs to have earned the right to keep the European Cup.

The stadium is located a 15 minute metro journey from Amsterdam Centraal. You can go on the World of Ajax tour and check out the Ajax Museum at the stadium, or if you’re in Amsterdam on a match day, go along and spectate. The Johan Cruijff ArenA seats 55,000 and the Dutch lend themselves to a good atmosphere.

2. Amsterdam City Swim

The City Swim is an annual event taking place in September to raise money for motor neurone disease (known as ALS in the Netherlands).

The swimmers traditionally begin at the Marine Etablissement Amsterdam, and brave the waters for the duration of the 2,000m course which finishes on the Keizersgracht.

You can donate, swim, or simply spectate, with entertainment usually around the start and finishing lines.

3. TCS Amsterdam Marathon

The Amsterdam Marathon, which starts and ends at the Olympic stadium, takes place in October each year. The course features several highlights along the way, such as the Rijksmuseum, the Zuidas, the river Amstel and going through the Vondelpark.

The atmosphere is really great if you fancy going along to watch, or if you’re a runner you can take part in the marathon, the half or the 8km.
