1. d’Vijff Vlieghen

Probably my favorite Dutch restaurant in Amsterdam, d’Vijff Vlieghen (literally meaning ‘The Five Flies’) serves classic Dutch dishes in a lavishly decorated canal side restaurant. The building is a maze of different dining rooms each with unique character and history.

With a more expensive menu than most of my recommendations, this is perfect for a real treat or celebratory dinner. The beef tenderloin is delicious.

Definitely book in advance.

2. Spaghetteria

With 6 locations across Amsterdam you’re never far from the authenticity and buzziness of a Spaghetteria Pasta Bar. They have a daily changing menu of pasta dishes as well as bread sides and tiramisu. Their fresh, homemade pasta is produced in their very own laboratorio artigianale, an artisanal workplace where they work in accordance with the traditions of the Italian pasta guild. They also pride themselves on making a serious effort to work as responsibly and sustainably as possible.

You can’t book so get there early to beat the queues – and be prepared to squeeze up next to fellow diners!

3. Brouwerij Troost Westergas

This is one of my favorite spots in Amsterdam, often heading here for burgers and beer. Troost is a microbrewery located in Westerpark, about a 30 minute walk from Amsterdam Centraal. They brew a variety of rotating ales, lagers and stouts from their onsite brewery, and do brewery tours on Saturday afternoons.

Alongside their beer they serve tasty and indulgent food, the burgers and sweet potato fries are DELICIOUS! Booking recommended but you can also normally walk in.

4. Restaurant De Kas

A real Amsterdam gem, Restaurant De Kas offers a unique dining experience – inside an 8m high luxury greenhouse in the middle of a beautiful park. At De Kas everything is grown in the surrounding greenhouses, and the fixed menu is designed around whatever has been picked that day. They started in 2001 and their ethos has always been ‘from plant to plate’. And, as you might expect from the price per head (!), the food is delicious. Book months in advance.

5. Happyhappyjoyjoy West

If you love Asian-fusion dishes being served in a relaxed tapas-style way – in a buzzy, colourful and trendy interior – then you’ll love this place as much as I do. The bright Asian interior is complemented by a delicious selection of street food dishes inspired by Thai, Malay, Vietnamese, Indonesian aaaand Chinese cuisines. Try a selection of Shao Mai dim sum, Bun Chao meatballs, or Massaman Neau curry and wash them down with fresh coconut water and traditional teas, innovative cocktails and Asian beers. A really popular spot with locals so booking is recommended.
